There were equally good reasons in favour of a larger union and in maintaining the status quo. Both Nova Scotia and New Brunswick were prospering. The traditional industries of fishing, shipbuilding, agriculture, and lumbering were thriving. Politically, the colonies had recently received a large degree of local independence (responsible government) and were reasonably content with their positions in the British Empire. On the flip side of the coin, the United States seemed intent on ending the Reciprocity Treaty, to which many people attributed the region’s economic success. Perhaps Maritimers needed to develop better trade relations with central Canada—which meant the completion of the Intercolonial Railway.
